It was only watching the World Cup this year that I learned of England’s flag of St. George’s Cross. That’s not actually the “Ireland” flag.  That’s the personal emblem of the Fitzgerald family which was used to represent Ireland.  Also, note that the flag omits St. David’s Cross, one of the symbols of Wales.
